As seen in our latest Instagram reel

Golden, crunchy skin, tender flaky fish, and bold spices in every bite — this Crispy Spiced Whole Fried Fish Platter is a seafood feast that brings everyone straight to the table. This is the show-stopping platter from @osamashealthyrecipes that had everyone commenting FISH for the recipe. A whole fish is coated in a flavorful blend of aromatic spices, then fried until beautifully crisp on the outside while staying juicy and tender inside, served with fresh lemon wedges, herbs, and your favorite dipping sauce.

Why you’ll love them

  • A true centerpiece: one whole crispy fish feeds a crowd and looks spectacular on the table.
  • Serious protein: roughly 35g per serving from the whole fish.
  • Bold, aromatic spice crust — crunchy outside, juicy and flaky inside.
  • Perfect for family gatherings and weekend feasts with almost no fancy equipment.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole fish (about 1.5 lb / 680 g, e.g. tilapia or red snapper), cleaned, scaled, and gutted
  • 1 tbsp kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (adjust to heat preference)
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour or rice flour, for dusting
  • Neutral oil, for frying (about 2 cups)
  • Lemon wedges, fresh herbs (cilantro or parsley), and sliced jalapeños, for serving
  • Your favorite dipping sauce (chili sauce or garlic aioli)

Instructions

  1. Prep the fish. Pat the whole fish very dry inside and out with paper towels. Score 3–4 diagonal slashes on each side, about ½ inch deep, so the seasoning penetrates.
  2. Season. Mix the salt, pepper, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, and cayenne. Rub the spice blend generously all over the fish and into the scores. Dust lightly with flour, shaking off the excess.
  3. Heat the oil. Pour oil into a large heavy skillet or wok to about 1 inch deep. Heat over medium-high until it reaches 350°F (175°C) — a pinch of flour should sizzle immediately.
  4. Fry. Carefully lower the fish into the hot oil. Fry 5–6 minutes per side, without moving it, until deeply golden and crisp. The skin should be audibly crunchy.
  5. Drain. Lift the fish out with a slotted spatula and drain on a wire rack (not paper towels, which trap steam and soften the crust). Rest 3 minutes.
  6. Serve. Transfer to a platter with lemon wedges, fresh herbs, sliced jalapeños, and dipping sauce. Serve immediately while the skin is at its crispiest.

Tips

  • The drier the fish before seasoning, the crispier the final crust — don’t skip the pat-dry.
  • Keep the oil at 350°F; too cool and the fish absorbs oil, too hot and the spices burn.
  • Score the fish deep enough for seasoning to reach the flesh, but not so deep it falls apart.
  • Serve right away — fried fish waits for no one.
